Hidden between the villas in the Wassenaar district of Rijksdorp is a bunker complex. Under the foliage of the majestic oaks, beeches and chestnuts, the bunkers are hardly visible from the air. This was a reason for the German occupiers to build a command post here in 1942. The infantrymen who supported the coastal defense line Atlantic Wall were housed in the meter-thick structures.

After the Second World War, the bunkers were taken into use by the Dutch army, which estalished a communication center here. In the context of NATO, air force communication was set up here during the Cold War. This at a time when telex and coded telephone lines were the ways to keep in touch
