Wassenaars ‘best kept secret’ is its wealth in heritage. Every year on the second Saturday of September, some of it is open to the public on the National Open Heritage Day. For the Foundation Open Heritage Day Wassenaar this day is more than a sum of monuments to be visited. All these monuments together tell the social, economic and cultural history of our beautiful village and that is a fascinating story.
Pleasant Places is this years national theme of the Heritage Day. A theme that is exemplary for the history of Wassenaar. Already in the 17th Century, wealthy townsmen bought large rural plots in Wassenaar for leasure. In summer it was more pleasant to stay in this lush village near the coast than in warm and stinky towns like The Hague. In the 19th Century Prince Frederik der Nederlanden bought many of these estates. He linked them to one another by means of a leisurely park route with curiosities along the way. We invite you to ride along this route or otherwise you may want to discover one of the other special monuments in Wassenaar. In any case, we wish you a pleasant day!
